Injectable fillers are in-office procedures with minimal downtime and are an appealing option for patients with early to moderate signs of aging as well as others who are looking for non-surgical options. Dr. Meier uses them specifically to fill in wrinkles or hollows that occur with aging. Depending upon the injectable, a single session or a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart will accomplish optimum results. Because of his advanced techniques and training, Dr. Meier utilizes them to their maximum effect and in areas not typically injected by the inexperienced injector. Periorbital injections including correcting the hollow underneath the eyes can have a great benefit that lasts for years.
Depending on the type of filler and area injected, you can expect a result that lasts from 4 months to almost two years for most fillers. There are also fillers that have permanent effects. Injectables which provide only temporary results will require repeat treatments in order to maintain the improvement.
Most patients require only a topical or local anesthetic for injection. In-office sessions usually take less than 45 minutes and patients can continue on with their normal routine immediately afterward.
Types of Fillers:
Restylane is FDA approved for treatment of the smile lines and is a natural, safe filler that is not derived from an animal or human source. Restylane typically provides around 6 months of enhancement for volume deficient areas such as the lips and smile lines. Dr. Meier coauthored the important paper describing its use in the hollow underneath the eyes that create dark circles with results lasting up to 2 years! This superior product can be combined with other fillers, such as Radiesse, for optimal enhancement. A private consultation with Dr. Meier will help establish which filler is ideal for you.
Perlane is the newest member of the Restylane family. Perlane is a longer lasting, slightly thicker version of Restylane that is intended for volume filling along with correcting deeper lines and folds such as the "marionette" lines. Perlane does work well for lip augmentation especially for those in whom Restylane or Juvederm does not last long enough. However, owing to its thickness, Perlane can feel somewhat firmer in the lips. Perlane is not intended for fine lines or wrinkles. Restylane is preferred for this purpose. Perlane is expected to last between 6 months to a year.
Juvéderm Ultra and Ultra Plus
Juvéderm is the latest member of the hyaluronic acid (HA) family that provides a smooth and long-lasting result. Recently FDA approved in June 2006 for use in the United States, Juvéderm has had extensive experience throughout Europe and Canada. It comes in two formulations: Ultra and Ultra Plus. Ultra is similar to Restylane and works well for lip augmentation and fine lines and wrinkles. Ultra Plus is a thicker version of Ultra to be used in deeper folds such as the smile lines and marionette lines. Both products can be used to provide a "liquid" facelift by defining the jawline and masking an early jowl.
Radiesse offers a longer lasting result of around 1-2 years. It is biocompatible and ultimately biodegradable. Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxyapatite, which is a naturally occurring substance in your body. It is an ideal treatment for volume contouring/replacement. However, it should not be used for fine lines and wrinkles.
Sculptra is a product designed to restore facial volume loss in the aging or diseased face. It is FDA approved since August 2004 for HIV-related facial fat volume loss known as lipoatrophy. However, Sculptra has also been used successfully to help restore the volume loss that is associated with the aging process of the face. Performed in more than 150,000 patients worldwide since 1999, Sculptra has shown reliable volume enhancement. Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a material used in dissolvable surgical sutures for many years. The product is placed in the skin and creates a tissue response of collagen production to thicken depressed and hollow areas of the face. The collagen stimulation takes several treatments over a few months to show a cosmetic benefit.
Silicone microinjections provide natural appearing lip enhancement as well as nasal defect contouring. Dr. Meier uses only the highest quality medical-grade product for facial enhancement. Using microinjections helps ensure that the treated area maintains a soft and natural feel. Repeated sessions are usually necessary to arrive at the desired effect, which is effectively permanent.
